Fascinating Names

For as long as I can remember, I have been fascinated with the names people give their children.
Not the every day Emilys and Michaels, but the odd, interesting ones.
I mean, wouldn't you want to get to know someone named "Uniqua"?
Some names are understandable. Names like "Darling" or "Precious".
Some are sweet, like Candy and Rose,Other are rough and manly, like Rodney and Roscoe.
Those I can understand.

It's the really "off-the-wall" names that thrill me most. And the way they are sometimes combined can really give you a picture of who they belong to or, at least, of who named them.
Take Wy'havious Tor'teaus for example. That's his given name. I think the last name was something plain like Smith. Smith is just so common, his parents must have thought they needed something that would stick out. Your brain wants to say it like a question in broken English. Why have us tortillos?

Like the sweet little girl we met at the dentist office. Her name was Infinity. Her mother proudly said" I really liked Toy Story, I saw it when I was pregnant and this chile just kicked and kicked. So when she was borned I named her Infinity Anbeyond".
Now try and keep a staight face while some teenage mother is proudly exclaiming that.

Then there's poor old Damya. When I first saw this name, I thought"What was her mother thinking?"
Damya ! This is my 6th and last baby ! Damya ! Damya! Damya !
Wrong! It's pronounced "Duh Mia". Guess no one thought to write it out on paper and see how it looked. Now every year when school starts, this child has to educate the teacher on how to pronounce it.

Same as Sade'. Now please don't forget that apostrophe on the end of her name. When you send home a note about Sade''s field trip pass, please don't enrage mama by forgetting that extra bit of flair ! Oh and by the way, her name is pronounced
"Shar day".

How about "Tequila". Is that some kind of hint about how she was brought into this world?
Where was Ireland Iceland Jones born? Detroit !

Now, about those combined names. Like little "Azalea Green-Power" She sounds like some kind of amazing plant food.
And "Princess Snow" whose last name just so happens to be "White". Sure hopes she likes Disney. But most likely, she's more tomboy that the boys in her neighborhood !

Williegaye Breedlove, now there's a name for a girl !
Christopher Watcha McCullum. Huh??
Ima Willon, bet she's fun at parties!
Urhines (pronounced Your Highness) Kendall Icy Eight Special K

Celebrities have even jumped on this band wagon. Apple Martin, daughter of Gwyneth Paltrow, Tu Morrow, daughter of Rob Morrow.,and of course we all have heard of the Zappa kids, Dweezle, Moon Unit and Diva.

And it's not just here in the USA,
From Manilla, The Archbishop of Manilla - Cardinal Sins,
From Zimbabwe - Torque Wrench Dlamini

In New Zealand, the government had to crack down on giving children odd names. My theory is that they want to be respected, not the laughing stock of the world. Parents were saddling their offspring with albatrosses of names like
Talulah Does The Hula From Hawaii. No, she's not FROM Hawaii, that's part of her given name ! She legally petitioned the court, at 9 years old, to change it.
Number Sixteen Bus Shelter - guess he was concieved or born there !

Sad News

We have had a real hard time these past few months. My dad passed away Oct 11, in Hospice. He and my mother had just celebrated their 60th Anniversary in August.
He was 79.
A week later, my husbands uncle died very unexpectantly. My dad and Uncle Harris are probably telling each other all their war stories.
Then Nov 3, my father-in-law had a stroke and died.
My children lost both granddaddies in one month's time.
Needless to say, we are sick to death of funerals !!!
They say trouble comes in three's. We are hoping that is right and we are through for quite awhile.
I am hoping to get my creativity to working again. Seems like it is just stuck and has been for a while.
I guess that's just part of grieving.

Sorry it's been so long. Not having a computer at home stinks !
Hubby got a new job that he likes way better than the old one, God answered our prayers once again. Thank You, Lord.
My dad is in Hospice and not doing really well ,but we are talking about "The Energizer Bunny" here. I expected him to bounce back again once more, but he hasn't bounced very high this time.
We don't know how much time we'll have left with him, so I am trying to spend it wisely.
Please pray for the family as we are all tired and weary.
Maybe I'll soon be back to write more, maybe not. Time will tell.
God be with you all,
Linda

Just an update for those who love me most. Oh, and for those others too, You know who you are!
I am still alive and kickin'. Not real high, mind you.
We are sweating it out down here in south Georgia. Would go to the beach, but they are filming a Miley Cyrus movie there and I AM NOT getting into that traffic !
We will have to be happy with the kiddie pool. At least it is wet !
No computer fairy yet, but we haven't lost hope. Had a nice young man look at it . He says the cd rom is gone out. As old as it is, we might just decide to buy a new one. HAve to quit eating first. BOy ! Groceries have gone up !
Smile, it ain't all bad, I am getting some housework done and my hubby is happy.
Love ya,
lillinda

Hello Friends,
My computer has crashed and I am having to go to the library to get my email and such. This is a pain, although I am grateful that they offer this service !
I will probably not post again until sometimes in late June and hopefully by then, I may be able to do this in the comfort of my own pajamas. They kind of look down on you at the library if you show up in your pajamas !
By then, maybe I will have something of interest to write about, but you can't count on it. especially if my life keeps on the way it has been. doin' the same ole same ole !
Not that I am complaining, I sure would rather be bored doing this than some other stuff I could think of !
I appreciate all of ya'll that will miss me.
Hoping the computer fairy comes to my house soon,
Linda

Mother's Day Memory

Do you remember Evening In Paris cologne? It came in small pretty blue bottles.
When I was a child, my sister and I would pool our money and walk to the store. The store in our little hole -in- the- wall, was named "The Big and Little Variety Store."
There, we would peruse the shelves , looking for just the right Mother's Day gift.
With our limited resources, it usually came to a choice between a floral hankercheif or a bottle of Evening In Paris.
We would take it up to the counter and hand over our meager dimes , pennies and maybe a quarter or two. The old lady clerk would smile and treat it as if it were a gift for a queen. Sometimes she would even wrap it in pink tissue paper for us.
We would take it home and secret it in the underwear draawer in our dresser and spend the rest of the afternoon making cards from construction paper and old Sears or J.C. Penney's catalogs.
Sunday morning, we would place our precious gift on a tray beside her plate and with dad's help, we would bring her breakfast in bed.
She would open the gift and proclaim,"Oh, Just what I was hoping for, Evening In Paris!"
She would dab some on her wrists and behind her ears and we would just beam, believing every word.
I wonder now, if she ever went straight to the bathroom and washed it off. I am sure for the price we paid, it couldn't have smelled all that nice. But the blue bottle was pretty!
